Poverty and Isolation of Middle-aged People in Gongsi-chon

The unfamiliar name, Daehakdong

In the alleyways of Daehakdong, flyers advertising vacant rooms sway in the wind. As you climb up the narrow streets, the price of the rooms decreases in proportion to the increasing slope. Located below Gwanak Mountain, where Seoul National University is situated, this place comes to mind when you think of a goshiwon village. With the abolition of the civil service exam in 2017 and a decrease in international students due to COVID-19, room prices have dropped even further, and rooms remain unoccupied.

Middle-aged people are filling up these vacant rooms.

Those who failed to succeed in goshiwons, unable to let go of their lingering attachment to their youth, wander around in search of slightly better environments at a lower cost. To endure, they try to maintain a balanced diet to nourish themselves, but it seems futile compared to their financial situation.

The quiet recluse of the streets

The buildings in the Daehakdong alleyways have an unusually high number of windows, and dozens of air conditioner outdoor units are aligned, working to combat the heat. In the afternoon, when the hot sun descends, there is no noise from the fans and no intense heat in the alleyways. The sound of a small cry from a stray cat wandering on the scorching asphalt, pierced by the heat of the sun, can be heard.

Behind the cat, a familiar man appeared. A middle-aged man with a black bag slung over his shoulder, he was dressed in shorts and slippers. Walking without the sound of friction from his shoes, he glanced briefly, checking the doors, and then passed through the entrance with a determined posture.

A middle-aged man isolated in a small goshiwon

Most middle-aged people who have come to goshiwon villages with their experiences of failure tend to isolate themselves from the outside world. Due to their past failures, they are cautious around strangers, and it is not easy for them to form new relationships. The people they meet here do not easily reveal their true selves. However, they also needed people. They needed friends. They poured out their stories of struggle and repeated their hopes of success once again.

Dozens of rooms in one building

The exterior of goshiwon villages can take various forms, such as detached houses or villas. However, once you enter the entrance, the interior looks the same. After passing through the smell emitted by dozens of pairs of shoes neatly arranged in shoe racks larger than human height, you will find dark corridors with rooms on either side.

Each of those rooms holds its own world.

One man has chosen his cave again

When he stretches out his arms, the opposite wall meets his hands, and when he extends his feet, something else lies beneath his feet. The middle-aged man in the goshiwon village, who has been fighting alone for a long time due to various reasons, has once again lost the courage to stand up.
