Virginia Swindle, 97, grew up picking cotton in the fields of the northern Mississippi Delta. Virginia worked at Walmart until the age of 91. After her retirement, her health began to decline. She now requires continuous care and is the oldest resident of Heritage Nursing Center in Kennett, Mo. Sitting in her room at the nursing home, Virginia wears a pearl necklace that peeks out from the collar of her shirt. She carries a small, handmade crochet bag slung over her shoulder, ready for a day of meals, therapy, a nap or two and spending time with friends. One of the best parts of her week is when her son, Gary Brown, comes to visit. The nursing staff describes her as a lovely person. Virginia has memorized each employee’s name and always has a bright smile.
